Canada Wholesale Sales Shrink More than Estimated
Wholesale sales in Canada declined 1.1 percent month-over-month in October of 2019, following a downwardly revised 0.8 percent rise in September and compared with market expectations of a 0.1 percent drop. Sales fell in four of the seven subsectors, led by machinery, equipment and supplies (-4.5 percent), namely computer and communications equipment & supplies (-4.3 percent) and construction, forestry, mining and industrial machinery, equipment & supplies (-2.3 percent). Other decreases were seen in the miscellaneous subsector (-3.4 percent); building material and supplies (-0.4 percent) and food, beverage and tobacco (-0.2 percent) subsectors. Meantime, sales in the motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts & accessories subsector remained flat while gains were posted in the farm product (3.1 percent) and in the personal and household goods (0.2 percent) subsectors.

Canada Wholesale Sales Beat Forecasts
Wholesale sales in Canada jumped 1 percent month-over-month in September of 2019, following a 1.2 percent decline in August and beating market forecasts of a 0.4 percent increase. Sales were up in five of seven subsectors. In dollar terms, the machinery, equipment and supplies, the personal and household goods, and the food, beverage and tobacco subsectors rose 4.4 percent and contributed the most to the increase in September. Other increases were recorded for personal and household goods (1 percent); food, beverages and tobacco (0.6 percent) and building materials/supplies (0.3 percent). In contrast, the motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories subsector posted the largest decline (-0.8 percent). Considering the third quarter, sales increased 0.8 percent, the fourteenth consecutive quarterly increase, led by the personal and household goods (+3.2 percent) and the miscellaneous (+3.7 percent) subsectors.

Wholesale sales in Canada decreased 1.2 percent from a month earlier in August 2019, after a downwardly revised 1.4 percent rise in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 0.3 percent gain. Lower sales were recorded in the machinery, equipment and supplies subsector (-2.6 percent), of which construction, forestry, mining, and industrial machinery, equipment and supplies (-4.3 percent); personal and household goods (-3.4 percent), namely textile, clothing & footwear (-10.7 percent) and pharmaceuticals and pharmacy supplies (-2.2 percent); motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories (-1.2 percent); food, beverages & tobacco (-0.4 percent) and miscellaneous (-0.7 percent). In contrast, sales rose for building material and supplies (0.8 percent). On a yearly basis, wholesale sales advanced 2.0 percent.

Wholesale sales in Canada increased 1.7 percent from a month earlier in July 2019, after an upwardly revised 0.7 percent gain in the previous month and beating market expectations of a 0.1 percent fall. Sales went up in the personal & household goods subsector (4.7 percent), mainly boosted by the pharmaceuticals & pharmacy supplies industry (7.3 percent); motor vehicle & motor vehicle parts and accessories (4 percent), namely motor vehicle (4.8 percent); miscellaneous (3.6 percent) and food, beverage & tobacco (0.8 percent). On the other hand, sales dropped in the machinery, equipment & supplies (-1.1 percent); building material & supplies (-0.2 percent) and farm product (-0.2 percent) subsectors. On a yearly basis, wholesale sales advanced 3.4 percent.

Canada Wholesale Sales Rebound in June
Wholesale sales in Canada rose 0.6 percent from a month earlier in June 2019, rebounding from an upwardly revised 1.9 percent fall in the previous month and above market expectations of a 0.3 percent gain. Sales increased in the miscellaneous subsector (3.5 percent), mostly due to other miscellaneous (7.2 percent) in particular logs, wood chips, minerals, ores and concentrates, precious metals and second-hand goods; machinery, equipment & supplies (1.5 percent); food, beverage & tobacco (1.3 percent), led by food (0.9 percent); and farm products (8.3 percent). On the other hand, sales in the motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts & accessories sector dropped 1.9 percent, mainly due to motor vehicle and parts (-2.4 percent). On a yearly basis, wholesale sales went up 2.3 percent.

Canada Wholesale Sales Unexpectedly Fall in May
Wholesale sales in Canada fell 1.8 percent from a month earlier in May 2019, following a downwardly revised 1.7 percent gain in the previous month and missing market expectations of a 0.5 percent rise. It was the largest decline in wholesale trade since March 2016, as sales dropped in the motor vehicle and parts subsector (-4.3 percent from 2.5 percent in April), the steepest monthly decrease since February last year, namely motor vehicle industry (-5.2 percent). Also, sales went down for food, beverage and tobacco (-1.2 percent from 1.8 percent); machinery, equipment and supplies (-0.9 percent from 5 percent), led by construction, forestry, mining and industrial machinery, equipment and supplies industry (-2.7 percent); personal households (-0.8 percent from 5.8 percent); and miscellaneous goods (-4.2 percent, the same as in April), in particular agricultural supplies (-11.1 percent). On a yearly basis, wholesale sales increased 1.2 percent.
