Dominican Republic Holds Interest Rate at 4.50%
The Central Bank of Dominican Republic left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 4.50 percent at its November 30 meeting. Policymakers said that the decision is based on the risk balance regarding inflation outlook, international and domestic macroeconomic indicators, market expectations and medium-term projections. The Committee noted that the annual inflation rate was 2.48% in October (vs 2.0 percent in September), still well below the target range (4% +/- 1%) and it is expected to rise to around the medium range by the end of 2019. Policymakers also underscored that economic activity grew 5.2 percent in October and accumulated a 4.8 percent expansion rate in the first ten months of the year.

The Committee noted that the annual inflation rate rose to 2.0% in September from 1.7 percent in August boosted by prices of food & non-alcoholic beverages, still well below the target range (4% +/- 1%) and it is expected to rise to around the medium range by the end of 2019. Policymakers also underscored that economic activity grew 5.1 percent in September and accumulated a 4.8 percent expansion rate in the first nine months of the year.

The Committee noted that the annual inflation rate rose to 1.7% in August from 1.4 percent in July boosted by cost of food & non-alcoholic beverages, still well below the target range (4% +/- 1%) and it is expected to remain around the lower range by the end of 2019. The Committee reaffirmed its commitment to drive monetary policy towards the achievement of its inflation target and the proper functioning of the financial and payment systems and will continue to monitor global economic developments and its impact on aggregate demand.

Dominican Republic Cuts Interest Rate to 4.5%
The Central Bank of Dominican Republic lowered its benchmark interest rate by 25bps to 4.50 percent at its last meeting meeting. The move follows a 25bps slash in the July meeting and leaves the rate at its lowest level since July 2013. Policymakers said that the decision is based on the risk balance regarding inflation outlook, international and domestic macroeconomic indicators, market expectations and medium-term projections. The Committee noted that the annual inflation rate rose to 1.4% in July from 0.9% in June, below the target range (4 percent +/- 1 percent) for the ninth consecutive month and it is expected to remain below the lower range until the end of the year. Policymakers underscored that regional growth prospects have deteriorated and that global trade tensions intensified since the last meeting, but mentioned that domestic activity regained momentum. The bank also cut by 25bps its overnight deposit rate and repo rate to 3.25% and 6%, respectively.

Dominican Republic Cuts Key Rate to 4.75%, Lowest in 6 Years
The Central Bank of Dominican Republic lowered its benchmark interest rate by 25bps to 4.75 percent at its July meeting, after inflation rate came in below the lower limit of the 4 percent ±1 percent target for the eight-straight month. It follows a 50bps cut in the previous month, bringing borrowing costs to its lowest since July of 2013. Annual inflation rate fell to a five-month low of 0.9 percent in June from 1.3 percent in May.

Dominican Republic Holds Interest Rate at 5.5%
The Central Bank of Dominican Republic held its benchmark interest rate at 5.5 percent at its 30 May 2019 meeting. Policymakers said that the decision is based on the balance of risks regarding the inflation outlook. The annual inflation rate rose to 1.61 percent in April from 1.47 percent in March, and it is expected to rise towards its midpoint target of 4 percent (±1 percent) over the next two years. The Committee noted that the country's economic growth remains solid, boosted by domestic demand and favourable monetary conditions. Abroad, they showed concern over current socio-political events in emerging markets.
